Genting Highlands

travel plans changed from Hatyai to Genting (last minute) due to security reason.
to start off with a hearty brunch at

#1   Dim Sum @ Restaurant Jin Xuan Hong Kong 锦选香港特极点心, Kuchai Lama (main branch).

not really surprised, all tables were fully occupied on a Saturday morning. this place has a very decent and organize numbering system (now) and a waiting area to occupy de waiting crowds (although not really a spacious one). de wait was not too tough to bear for both of us, just not too long =)

de morning crowds.
this place is also known as Kam Hin.

CLOCKWISE:
Stuffed brinjals
Steamed ribs in black bean
Phoenix claws
Har Gao (Prawn dumplings)
I kinda like their Phoenix claws anyway. yes, it's chicken feet so I can run really fast.

favourite of de day 1: Fish Paste (lightly seared).
don't judge a book by its cover, and don't judge a fish paste by how it looks (haha)! it was quite flavourful and tasty although its appearance might fail to please. I like this de most.

favourite of de day 2:   Siew Mai.
another pretty tasty dimsum. larger in size too if compared to others.

L-R: Porridge with Century Eggs, Lor Mai Kai and Chee Cheong Fun (prawn).
I don't really recommend their Chee Cheong Fun as it tasted quite bland. besides, prawns were quite small in size. Porridge and Lor Mai Kai were of normal kind.

yummy yummy=D

de meal costs us about RM30 each including a pot of tea for 2 pax (assuming ermmm normal appetite). it may be slightly expensive if compared to others but with a huge selections of pipping hot Dim Sum to choose from, with better size and quality, seriously I think it's worth for every single penny.

#2   First World Indoor Theme Park, Genting.

Genting has a Big Ban. Ben.

#3   Snacks @ Shanghai 10.

frankly speaking, nothing looks promising here. to be on de safe side, we opted for something that we have tried on de ground.

Teh Tarik.
I wish I could shout out "kurang manis" (less sweet) please.

Fried Flat Glass Noodles with Crab Roe and Shrimps.
I wish it was pipping hot but not warm. taste was more or less compromised.

Shanghai Xiao Long Bao.
an awful Xiao Long Bao tasted cold on de outside but hot (only) on de inside and it was exactly what we have got here. do check out de steam basket they used. it never failed to amaze me.

and it looks like bobby's plate.

#4   dinner @ Nyonya Colours.

things were selling slightly more expensive in Genting. something different at Nyonya Colours was that they reheated de Mee Siam upon serving.

Curry Chee Cheong Fun.

#5   Buffet breakfast @ Awana Hotels & Resorts.

we stayed at a Club Suite priced at RM433 (including tax), inclusive of buffet breakfast.
(NO SPECIAL RATE FOR GOVERNMENT SERVANTS)

typical local buffet breakfast served to kick start de day with a rich and balanced (hopefully) diet in accordance to their wide selections. you can choose to dine at de tables overlooking de golf course.

de so healthy.

and de not-so healthy.

#6   Late Lunch @ Restoran Makanan Laut, Gohtong Jaya.

stopping by at Gohtong Jaya for a meal is by far another must-do whenever you visit Genting. I have to say that this was perhaps, de best meal we had in Genting, of all. therefore, I would recommend one to plan this as de last food destination as it could actually help to wane whatever crappy food experience (and yet expensive) at Genting.

Stir-fried Water Cress.
water cress is a must-have in Genting as this vegetables is not really easy to find in KL. vegetables seemed fresher here compared to de ground.

Wild Boar Curry.
it seemed to be a scary dish at first thought but surprisingly they blend in pretty well.
this is a recommended dish.

Stir-fried mushrooms.
combination of three different types of mushrooms.

they charged everything at RM40 for 2 persons including a pot of tea for 2 pax. and goodbye Genting!

a hearty breakfast in de Chinese way
@
Yong Tau Foo stall (unknown),
Jalan Changkat,
Kajang Town.

(next to Kajang wet market)
.
.
.

A PLEASANT MORNING.
over here, they served two different dipping sauce: sambal and garlicky spicy chilli (smooth paste). this is something quite different from de ordinary chilli and sweet bean sauce for Yong Tau Foo. I didn't really like de garlic chili but de boy did.

EACH PIECE COSTS RM1.10
pork balls seemed to be rather disappointing.

DRY KUEY TIAU.
with dark and light soy sauce.

TOSS THEM ALTOGETHER WITH DE CHOPSTICKS AND SPOON.
and it's ready for ingestion=)

this is a place meant for de reminiscence of de good o' times back in high school. and seriously, I don't think de food stall has a name.

post continue from Day 1 Cameron Highlands.

.
.
.

#5   The Smokehouse Hotel, Tanah Rata.

parents stayed over here while we settled ourselves at Parkland. this place has very old traditional English style and beautiful garden. room on de other hand, was cozy but a lil stuffy (and felt mouldy due to a lack of ventilation). seriously, one night is sufficient for de thrill and experience, judging based on de fact that it costs from RM350++ per night for 2 persons.

they allow only residence to take picture.

#6   Cactus Farm, Brinchang.

one of de must-visit places in Cameron Highlands I would say. they sell cactus at an affordable price (you'll get offer for some if you buy more). here you get plenty of different species to choose from.

everything in a cactus pot.
happy family=)

Saam and second sister.
sweet corn (jagung manis) can be eaten raw! these were bought from along de roadside to Cactus Farm.
very sweet and crunchy.

lovely cactus.
in red, orange and pink.

and more cute lil mini cactus.

#7   Lunch @ OK Tuck, Brinchang.

our last stop at Cameron Highlands followed by a heavy rain. OK Tuck served average food.

CAMERON HIGHLANDS
,
Pahang.
.
.
.

we decided to take a drive up to prawn paradise before heading to Cameron (to satisfy de glutton souls). while driving along its way it was indeed quiet surroundings until we arrived at one of de gems in Tanjung Tualang, Perak.

#1   Sun Mee Fong Restaurant (新美芳海鲜楼) @ Tanjung Tualang, Perak.

there are actually quite a few number of seafood restaurants available in de same area. we chose this place simply because I have been here before. and always remember to make reservation in advance in order to avoid disappointment.

SPECIALTY 1: Steamed Freshwater Prawns.
trust me, these giant prawns are very juicy and succulent. every single bite seemed like chewing on chicken meat. noticed that they punctured a small hole on de prawn's head so that one could suck out de roe (oh so evil).

SPECIALTY 2: Deep Fried Freshwater Prawns.
deep-fried prawns mixed with soy sauce. another appetizing meal that spike up de cholesterol level. there might be a chance to spill de prawn roe onto someones' clothes when bite, seriously.

and other supplementary dishes:
Fried Nestum Squid, Steamed Chicken and Ojien.

drinks they called: 文头浪.
(bought from opposite stall)
I didn't quite get de name. it was something like Aiyu jelly but de name was unique. we ordered lime and coconut milk (santan) flavour. I actually quite like de one with coconut milk.

L-R: elder sister, mom and brother.

before continue de journey @ Sun Mee Fong.

finally, we were at our destination after approximately 3 hours drive. we arrived at de highest town in Cameron, Brinchang.

#2   Avant Chocolate & Strawberry Moment Dessert Cafe, Brinchang.

something to see and touch but pretty dull to purchase.
also quite pricey on de other hand.

London telephone booth wannabe (but failed).
because inside is empty (duhhh).

de boyfriend =P

look tasty and tempting.
it was strawberry this and strawberry that. very berry strawberry.
and flies love this place too.

Strawberry strudel.
I wish I like you.

Strawberry waffles.
oh no I dislike cold and hard waffles. simple dessert turned out to be pretty sad.

Strawberry juice and milkshake.

strawberry farm and strawberries everywhere.

if you dare.

pretty Gerbera.
can I bring it home? =P

#3   Bharat Plantations, Brinchang.

you no pick flowers not even pick up from de floor!

we made an album cover XD

my dad is de next Boh Tea king-to-be.
LOL!

Boyboy is a workaholic.

=jumpshot 1=

=jumpshot 2=

=jumpshot 3=

#4   Steamboat dinner @ Mayflower Restaurant, Tanah Rata.

we saw quite a few tables were foreigners (Caucasians) but seriously it was nothing to shout about. vegetables ain't that fresh after all (booooo...).

but credit given to de chilling weather.
de joy of steamboat!

there was nothing much to do in Cameron after dark except spending time together, TV and snacking (again) =)

to be continue at Family trip: Cameron Highlands Day 2.

RESTORAN BOSTON BARU,
Jalan Kapar,
Klang.
.
.
.

as we were somewhere nearby, de boy suggested to have our dinner at New Boston Restaurant. this place opens at 6pm and it is horribly pack with people at de moment when it opens (seriously). I didn't know that Klang people loves this place too.

#1   Steamed Lala with Superior Stock.
this is one of their must-try signature dishes. most of de tables would have order this. its lala is generally larger in size, and they added more wine (and minced garlic) into de dish if compared to Lala Chong's version. in terms of de spiciness level, I find it is bearable for a person with low threshold like me (but still loves spicy).

#2   Hokkien Noodles.
this is everyone's favourite. ordinary yummy. I have to admit that I'm quite special because I don't really prefer pork lard in Hokkien noodles (if I ever get to choose).

#3   Nestum Mantis Prawn.
a lil' too sweet (and dry) for my liking I would say. we should have opt for de another famous- Butter Mantis Prawn.

#4   Stir Fried Yau Mak with Garlic.
some greens to balance up de diet.

you have to go there really early otherwise pls be mentally prepare to wait for an hour or so for your food.

Leck Kee Chicken Rice,
叻记鸡饭
@

Jalan Changkat,
Kajang Town.
(next to Kajang wet market)
.
.
.

I considered this post a rather late update for a person who has been staying in Kajang (all these while) since she was born. I've always wanted to write something about Kajang =P

too bad de rice is NOT de most fragrant in Kajang town.

PORTION FOR TWO:
mixture of roasted chicken, roasted pork and char siew.

its char siew is highly recommended, others are considerably normal.
(I wish they could increase de char siew portion a lil)

it's worth a try if (only) you can bear with de grumpy and impatient attitudes of de stall owner. some may find him arrogant and unfriendly. also, requests such as "I prefer drumstick" or "I prefer char siew with less fat" and so on will not be entertained here. this place is definitely one of a kind but (some) people seems not bothered at all.

PS. you may bump into long queue during peak (lunch) hours.

BEN'S,
first floor,
KLCC.

(opposite Harrods)
=by BIG=

sharing good food and de precious moments at Ben's when de weekend oncall has finally arrived till de end. it was about food reward again after all of de hard work that has been done (haha).

nice ambiance, nice motto.
it was pretty much felt like Delicious-concept in here. in other words, Ben's is another good place for brunch and high tea (similar range of price too).

its uniquely handwritten menu.
for food you can ever imagine. can you take de risk?

drinks:
ROOT BEER FLOAT   RM7.90
ICED CHOCOLATE   RM9.90

root beer was kinda so-so.

#1   BEN'S NASI ISTIMEWA   RM29.90
they use traditional Basmati rice (long grain rice). this was pretty good to me although some might not favour de unique rice fragrance. anyhow, meat eaters would definitely love this (and huge portion) =)

#2   PAD THAI LINGUINE   RM17.90
obviously, it was a fusion of Western and Thai (perhaps it was skewed to de taste of Thai). l love this too and de inclusion of a variety of vegs made you felt more healthy!

there will be a second visit for sure. well, at least for Ben's desserts =)
Ben's has another branch at Pavilion but seriously I will prefer de one in KLCC as it offers a more spacious and comfort place to dine in.

=happy day=

continue from D1: Malacca food trip.

after checked out from de hotel we were back to Jonker street for more local delicacies.

#1   brunch @ JONKER 88.
(opposite Geographer cafe)

it was a self-service place. and again, you have to queue for de food and squeeze your way through to de inside of de restaurant.

de antiquarians as display.
less money to spend for maintenance, and things just got better when they looked old and rusty.

NYONYA ASSAM LAKSA.
I used to like this (I still like it btw). just that they added too much curry oil for today's serving.

BABA LAKSA.
compared to Donald & Lily's, it has a slightly richer coconut gravy. it was more like a synergistic result from de combination of laksa and assam laksa.

DURIAN CENDOL.
this was good but not as good as my last visit to Jonker 88.

#2   Walking along Malacca city.

#3   de hidden Malacca.
it feels like little Venice, with many surprises =)

#4   chilling @ GEOGRAPHER CAFE.
this place was definitely de best choice to recharge and to avoid de longest waiting time at Chung Wah chicken rice ball under an exhausting hot sun.

refreshing juices.
perfect as thirst quencher.

de finger food: FRUIT ROJAK.
sesame in abundance.

#4   CHUNG WAH CHICKEN RICE BALL @ Jonker Street.
chicken rice ball- another must eat in Malacca even though de sky drops.

extremely longggggg queue.
you would probably get sun burnt before you could actually get a bite of its chicken rice ball. total madness.

chicken in madness (or rice balls madness perhaps).
its appearance was totally negligible. you find no beauty of food art at all and you will probably start thinking why people can be so crazy about it. anyway, believe it or not we did bump into a HK artist queuing up with his family right behind us too for de chicken rice ball.

I) BARLEY
II) RICE BALLS
III) COMPLEMENTARY HOMEMADE CHILLI

you can top up for chicken only but not for rice only unless you order more chicken (hmm it sounded confusing). balls were precious anyway.. haha.

#5   NADEJE @ Plaza Mahkota.

looking for something sweet before we head back to KL.

I wish I have more space in my stomach so that I can be fed on all these.
it's just so hard to choose.

strawberry chocolate and double chocolate mille crepes.

de original slice.
this was de best.

and thanks for de lovely food, Malacca!

de weekend break to
MALACCA.
for a food hunting mission.
=)

on our way to Malacca=)

#1   choice of hotel: HOLIDAY INN @ Jln Syed Abd Aziz.
(next to Mahkota Hotel)
delux 1 king bed at RM365, breakfast non-inclusive. we were lucky to have de room to be automatically upgraded to Executive room upon check-in.
Hotel Inn is located conveniently next to de city’s main interest places (at driving distance).

they have soft and firm pillows.
I know soft pillow smells bad.

happy birthday to de boy!
xoxo.

view from our room.
spot Tam Ming Sari (de rotating tower).

#2   first eat-out point: DONALD & LILY @ Jln Tun Tan Cheng Lock.

(behind Heeren St.)
we did spend some time to look for this restaurant as it was quite a small set up with a narrow entrance. we were lucky as we came in about 5 minutes earlier (slightly). de queue got even longer afterwards. it was almost 130pm but de place was still crowded with hungry (glutton) souls.

a very petite restaurant layout .
beware of your head! avoid head bumping.

NYONYA MEE SIAM.
I was very disappointed when they told us it was finished in de first place. but luckily they managed to prepare it again due to high demand as I could see customers coming in continuously. submerged in sourish light gravy, this Mee Siam was kinda different from de usual ones we had. we (I) love this very much.

other food available (starts from upper right-clockwise):
I) NYONYA LAKSA
II) TAU KUA (ROJAK)
III) CENDOL

to me I think Nyonya laksa lacks de coconut enriched flavour which it was supposed to have (hence de Nyonya style), it wasn't rich enough. otherwise, it would just taste pretty much like a normal curry laksa. Tau kua or Rojak was basically a combination of fish paste, taufu, and fruits accompanied by spicy sweet sauce. not forgetting Cendol on de other hand, was one of de signatures but I personally thought it was too bland to be popular. definitely not de best as I'm expecting something which tasted more appealing.

love its striking paint @ Donald & Lily.

#3   dessert time- MANGO & DURIAN MANIAC @ Jonker Street.
we decided to chill at a more quiet place and to avoid to walk under de hot sun.

yummy crispy wrap with durian.
this was de best among de three durian varieties we have ordered.

#4   Leisure walk @ Jonker Street.
we were being very touristy like everyone.

a nice and welcoming weather.
hello Malacca (and food)!

de boy was excited to see this.
yes he is easily tempted by ice-cream.

Yam ice-cream served in eggie cup.
it might get quite messy towards de end=P

fruit tea and carbonated drinks in glass bottles.

while on our way to dinner.
to satisfy de bottomless stomach, mindless eating indeed.

#5   SATAY CELUP: Ban Lee Siang @ Jln Ong Kim Wee.
one of de specialties in Malacca- a must eat even though I'm not really a fans of it when come to think of they recycle de peanut sauce until an unknown period. anyway, you might have to queue (again) when you're here. if possible try to get seats outside for better ventilation.

to make things clear, there were TWO Ban Lee Siang exist up until today. two rivals with identical name but located just next to each other, and at de same time, self-proclaimed they were not related. it definitely created a funny scene to de outsiders. anyhow, we did not notice de existence of two (different) restaurants until we were finished.

food at your own preference to dip into de spicy peanut sauce.
(each sticks costs RM0.60)
anyway, I felt some choices of food were ridiculously priced. imagine one stick only has one pork ball or one stick with only two button mushrooms. this was de Ban Lee Siang we went on de left when facing opposite de stalls.

#6   weekend night market @ Jonker walk.
(also known as Jln Hang Jebat)

with old folks singing, souvenirs, toys, clothes and plenty of food to eat (again).

PORK SATAY (along de street).
de best remedy after a long walk was to sit down to have some food (yes again) while listening to de old folks' singing at Jonker walk. there was a stage for performance just like de olden days. anyway, de pork satay did not bring much of de gastronomical stimulation.

FRIED RADISH CAKE.
it was not as good as it smelled when it was fried (booooo...).
de taste was a complete let down and sorry to say we did not even finish it.

guess who? =P
to look for yummy fried ice-cream.

it was approximately one week after CNY=)

Bao Xiang Bak Kut Teh
宝香绑线肉骨茶
6th floor,
Pavilion

this is de place where you can get luxurious and dainty bak kut teh. and you pay for de comfortable environment (mostly). it may also not satisfy de one with insatiable appetite however, with their pretty decent but slightly overpriced menu. unique it may seem, but it is definitely not something to die for.

de familiar chicken graphic.

everything in a lil serving bowl.
clockwise- pork ribs, pig tendon, pig stomach and golden mushroom.
(price ranged from RM15-RM19)
I only like de soup of de pork ribs (this is perhaps de best among de worst). yes they tasted differently, but nothing special as I found they lack de usual fragrant aroma of de bak kut teh.

additional treats.
we were given a plate of vegetables (on left) for free due to CNY.

anyway, yao char guai was kinda disappointing.

de only big bowl I noticed.

we did not try their famous string tied meat anyway. total bill costs approximately RM100 for 2 persons (normal portion). price ain't cheap, so do you think it worth a second visit?

AWET THAI CAFE,
Kajang (branch).

unsurprisingly, it's now in Kajang.

complimentary pandan flavoured drinks on right.

(clockwise)
#1  TOMYAM SEAFOOD.
#2  GLASS NOODLES SALAD.
#3  GREEN CURRY CHICKEN.
#4  SPICY BRINJALS.

thai food is never complete without tomyam. de tomyam was quite spicy for my (low) threshold but I still love it. glass noodles on de other hand, was quite bland because all I could taste was sour. green curry was pretty okay. and lastly de brinjals could be totally forgotten (haha).

THAI BBQ PORK NECK.
this is recommended (yummy).

THAI BBQ LAMB.
de taste is so different from de Cheras branch. here is more to disappointment.
furthermore, de lamb cutlets
did not look appealing.
(de picture was taken immediately when it was served on de table)

FRIED KANGKUNG (with sauce).
unhealthy healthy but worth a try.
be prepare to get your hands dirty because it is kinda difficult to eat (big chunky but crunchy). it has to go along with de sauce or not it would be too dry.

PANDAN CHICKEN.
not much of pleasing to de taste buds but would never go wrong.

MANGO STICKY RICE.
sticky rice not nice. mango not really nice.
submerged in overwhelmed coconut milk.
nothing is remarkable at all.

for de food price, I would say that it is slightly expensive judging over its quality of food. some more they charged more during Chinese New Year: extra RM1.50 for every vegetables and RM3.00 for everything other than vegetables ordered. this would be a great turn down before people actually started to order their food.

for eating experience at Cheras branch, pls click here. I would still prefer to dine in Cheras branch if possible.

CHINOZ ON THE PARK,
KLCC
.
.
.

love de decent and comforting environment because it is just located beside de park. there is an option for indoor and outdoor. we chose its set lunch offer which comprised of a starter, main course and a complimentary drink. all you have to pay is just RM29+ per person. here, they served fusion food ranging from local cuisine, western and even japanese food.

EARLY LUNCH TO KICK START DE DAY (and before last minute CNY shopping).
complimentary bread and butter, fresh lemonade (it was de only choice) and green pea soup which was de soup of de day.
de waiter will then ask whether you would like some fresh ground black pepper into your soup.

MUSHROOM SALAD.
I wish it has more button mushrooms. I prefer this over green pea soup.
*nods head*

LAMB SANDWICH (with fries).
also has button mushrooms =P

UNAGI SUSHI CUT ROLL.
yummy to go with japanese pickled ginger.

daily dessert:
BANANA PUDDING.

(with additional charge of RM10)
it didn't really have an attractive appearance but taste wise, it was okay.
extra marks would be given if they served bigger scoop of ice-cream =P

one thing that I like about this place is that food is served according to de right sequence: starter came first, then followed by main course and dessert (they would ask whether you want it to be served now). I'm not being too picky, seriously.

and I'm sorry to say it fails to impress both of us. its crab stick is pretty hard too.

(please make sure you remember de picture in de menu)

CHUKA ITAKO (with sauce).
only three pathetic baby octopus were given. and it was nothing close to de picture shown in their menu.
moreover, I don't really favour baby octopus with sauce.
but now, lets spot de difference!
obviously I felt cheated (grrrr...)

best meal of de night:

BAYERNHAUS,
Capsquare,
KL.
.
.
.

lunch or dinner after an oncall on weekend or public holiday is probably de thing that I look forward de most. as usual after work, we opted for Yut Kee but too bad it was closed on that day. like a headless chicken, we turned to German food Bayernhaus located at Capsquare, with more pork.

spot my iced lemon tea (=
it was literally quiet probably it was due to public holiday. anyway, after scanning de menu I felt that Bayernhaus didn't really offer wide selections of food (I'm not sure whether there are any restrictions for late lunch). on de other hand, they used mosquito coil (perhaps only in de afternoon). not really an interesting atmosphere. oh and definitely not wanting that smell to go with de food please xp

WILD MUSHROOM SOUP.
didn't really fancy de cream-alike thing.

SAUSAGE PLATTER (small portion).
(served with pan-fried potatoes and sauerkraut- German pickled vegetables)
it came with 3 different types of sausages: cheese, spicy and original (I suppose). I kinda like de original.

CRISPY PORK KNUCKLE (portion).
(served with pan-fried potatoes, sauerkraut and brown gravy)
I personally felt that their pork knuckle is better than Brotzeit's. well at least de meat is tender and not too dry. de crispy pork skin is lovely but it's unhealthy yummy food. anyhow, sauerkraut sort of balanced up de diet so it ain't that bad =P

it was way too much meat for de late lunch (we wanted something light initially I swear). but somehow we did manage to wipe de plates clean. ROAR!

followed by a full body pampering package at

enjoying a sweet escape from de hustle and bustle of de city life.

package inclusive of Shiatsu aromatherapy body massage, full body scrub and jacuzzi (choice of steam bath is also available). a complementary warm ginger tea was given at de end of de session (love it). btw de yellow shoes was a coincidence.

dinner was randomly chosen to be at
BUMBU BALI,
Puchong.

.

we didn't plan anything for dinner (I knew it sounded weird but seriously). we wanted to opt for Caff initially but too bad de place has closed down.

SQUID SALAD.
appetizing bites.
yumyum.

NASI CAMPUR CHICKEN
and
SIAP BUMBU
de nasi campur chicken tasted very ordinary (like its kangkung though!) but I think I prefer his Siap bumbu more. both dishes were very filling. or maybe we just didn't know how to control not eating=P

this is too s.w.e.e.t. for me.
